1926 Stone Cottage
PROJECT SUMMARY
After we uncovered nearly 20 years of overgrowth in the back yard of this stone cottage in the historic Grant Park neighborhood, we discovered beautiful terracing and hardscaping suggesting the home had once been a showpiece.
We developed a plan to replace the floor plan, fully modernizing all home systems while keeping the home appearance as original as possible. The original floor plan had 3 bedrooms and small bath and a steep set of stairs to the attic. In dilapidated original condition with extensive water damage, particularly around the fireplace, the entire living room floor system required replacing.
The sub floor and floor joists had to be replaced but much of the original hardwood flooring was salvaged and reinstalled. In the kitchen antique reclaimed white oak flooring was used to match the salvaged hardwoods and the floors in the bathroom were replaced with period mosaic tile,
In Grant Park, any changes to a home may not be visible from the street, so we made all visible structural changes in the back of the home. A new set of stairs were installed to provide code access to the Master suite constructed in an attic addition. The final outcome was a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home.
Grant Park’s historic commission approved all changes, finding them in keeping with neighborhood standards. The project was completed in 6 months, including permitting, and the cottage is once again a show home within its neighborhood.
